WSSU to promote severe weather readiness and warnings through StormReady program
AS THE TRIAD CONTINUES TO GET HIT BY SEVERE WEATHER, ONE LOCAL UNIVERSITY IS HELPING THE COMMUNITY PREPARE. WXII 12 KELLY KENDALL IS LIVE AT WINSTON-SALEM STATE UNIVERSITY, WHICH IS NOW THE SECOND STORM READY CAMPUS IN FORSYTH COUNTY. KELLY. IN THIS CONTEXT, WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE STORM READY? WELL, CHRISTINE, WHEN THE SKIES LOOK LIKE THEY DO TODAY OR WHEN THEY LOOK GRAY LIKE THEY DO RIGHT NOW, IT MEANS WINSTON-SALEM STATE IS ALERTING THE COMMUNITY AND MAKING SURE FOLKS ARE READY FOR ANYTHING THAT MIGHT COME THEIR WAY. IT'S ALL A PART OF THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE'S STORM READY PROGRAM TO BECOME A PART OF IT. THE UNIVERSITY HAD TO MEET SEVERAL CRITERIA, INCLUDING ESTABLISHING A 24 HOUR WARNING POINT AND EMERGENCY OPERATIONS CENTER, PROMOTING COMMUNITY PREPAREDNESS, AND DEVELOPING HAZARDOUS WEATHER PLANS. UNC SCHOOL OF THE ARTS WAS THE FIRST IN THE COUNTY TO EARN THIS DISTINCTION. 11 YEARS AGO, BUT IN A CEREMONY TUESDAY, WINSTON-SALEM STATE WAS RECOGNIZED AS THE SECOND. LEADERS SAY THEY WANT THE COMMUNITY TO BE READY NOT IF BUT WHEN STORMS ARRIVE. I'M READY. EMPHASIZES THE ALL HAZARDS APPROACH BECAUSE HERE IN NORTH CAROLINA, WE COULD SEE JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING.
EVERYTHING FROM TROPICAL STORMS AND HURRICANES, TORNADOES, FLASH FLOODS, FLASH FLOODS AND WINTER STORMS. THE STORM READY PROGRAM IS ALL ABOUT KNOWING WHAT TO DO AHEAD OF TIME BEFORE THE BAD WEATHER STRIKES, AND. WINSTON-SALEM STATE LEADERS SAY THEY HOPE TO BUILD A CULTURE OF RESILIENCE HERE ON CAMPUS SO THAT WHEN STUDENTS LEAVE, THEY TAKE THAT MESSAGE HOME WITH THEM TO EVEN MORE COMMUNITIES. LIVE IN WINSTON-SALEM..
